Public urged to help stop rapid spread of vomiting bug in Dublin hospitals

It's expected that visitor restrictions will remain in place at Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph's Hospital Raheny in Dublin into early next week.

Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital Raheny have put restrictions in place to try and contain an outbreak of Norovirus.

The hospitals are requesting only essential visits between 6pm and 8pm each evening, with visitors limited to one per patient.

Children are being asked not to visit the hospitals until the restrictions are lifted.

Professor Edmund Smith, Consultant Microbiologist at Beaumont Hospital, said it is important that people follow this advice.

Professor Smith said: "One of the ways in which we try and control it in hospitals is, if we identify a cluster of cases, we isolate the patients and restrict movement of staff, visitors and patients in that area.

"Therefore we are asking people to restrict their visiting to a very limited period between 6 and 8pm in the evenings and through the weekend.

"It's really very important in terms of controlling its spread, because this can get out of control very rapidly."
