One of the highlights of the year for Ireland's farming community is due to get underway in Co Kildare today.
President Mary McAleese will be on hand to officially open the 78th National Ploughing Championships in Athy.
The organisers say they expect around 150,000 people to attend the event over the next three days.
Athy was the site of the first ploughing championships in 1931.
Gardaí are advising people travelling to this year's event to use rail and bus services rather than driving directly to the site.
