Planning granted for Ireland's first urban beach

Ireland's first urban beach has been given the green light by An Board Pleanála.

The €3m floating swimming pool will be located alongside the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire in South Dublin.

The facility is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.

"An urban beach is a combination of a swimming pool and a facility for rest an relaxation to include things like deck chairs, artificial beach, changing rooms, beach bar, and so forth," said Gerry Dunne, CEO of the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company.

"We can proceed now to put this facility - it's a public amenity, effectively - into place for somewhere up to, hopefully, 2016."
