Pair held after drugs parcel intercepted

Two men were arrested today after detectives tracked drugs with an estimated street value of €60,000 sent in an airmail parcel to a house in Dublin.

The package containing 1.5kg of mephedrone and 1kg of herbal cannabis was detected by Customs officials when it arrived at Dublin Airport on a flight from China.

Gardaí tracked the parcel to an address in Hamilton Street, off South Circular Road, where an Irish man and a Brazilian man were arrested.

The pair, both in their 20s, are being held at Kevin Street Garda Station under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

The joint operation involved Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs Unit and the Kevin Street Garda Drugs Unit.

Mephedrone was formerly a so-called “legal high” sold in head shops.

It was recently banned by Health Minister Mary Harney under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
