Number of patients on waiting lists rises

The number of public patients on hospital waiting lists has reached almost 19,800.

The HSE figures for July show there were 19,770 adults and children waiting for procedures which require day care or an overnight stay.

That is up by 1,451 from April last year.

The rise is being blamed on bed closures and stricter budgets.
