New poll heaps pressure on Taoiseach's leadership

A new poll of Fianna Fáil backbenchers has today revealed that Brian Cowen would not survive a heave if a senior Cabinet Minister opposed him.

A Sunday Tribune poll of backbenchers says while there is unlikely to be a leadership challenge in the coming days, if any senior Minister ran against the Taoiseach, they would win.

Cabinet members have made a public show of support for the Taoiseach in the wake of a disastrous radio interview last Monday.

However, it has been reported that backbenchers have begun testing the water among senior Ministers to see if any of them are willing to emerge as a potential leader.
