New laws have come into effect tackling marriages of convenience in Ireland.
They give a registrar the right to investigate a couple who are looking to marry and ultimately he or she can refuse to issue a marriage registration form.
The Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has said the right to marry under EU Free Movement laws is abused in some cases and this will not be tolerated.
Fitzgerald is raising concerns about the potential for people to be coerced in sham marriages and even trafficked here for that purpose.
The minister believes this new laws are essential to stopping such cases.
