Negotiations planned to discuss Irish pension crisis

A series of consultation negotiations between trade unions, employers, the Government and other interest groups are due to take place over the coming months in a bid to resolve the current pension crisis.

At the moment there are 5 people working for every pensioner over the age of 65, however that number is expected to drop to 3 by 2031.

The Government says it will encourage more people to take out pensions to help pay for their retirement to ease the burden on the State.

The Minister for Social Affairs Martin Cullen has also not ruled out the introduction of some form of mandatory pension.
