The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, has said that he wants the proposed 600 extra speed cameras put in place as soon as possible.
The Government is advertising for private tenders to operate the system.
The cameras are designed specifically for accident blackspots around the country in a bid to curb road deaths.
Minister Cullen insists the new system is not about collecting revenue, but about saving lives.
“This is not about taking soft options on motorways and dual carriageways. It’s about alerting people around the country to the danger spots, and the very fact that speed cameras are there has an immediate impact in slowing us all down,” he said.
