Michael D Higgins declares interest in presidency

Michael D Higgins has confirmed he is interested in running for president, and will be seeking the Labour nomination.

Barnardos Chief Executive Fergus Finlay has already announced he is throwing his hat in the party ring.

Deputy Higgins paid tribute to the work of Mary McAleese and Mary Robinson during their terms in office, but said he believed there was room to broaden the role further.
