Melbourne attack leaves two Irish men critical

Two Irish men are fighting for their lives in Australia after they were attacked in Melbourne on Saturday night.

It is believed both men were backpackers and in their 30s.

Both were taken to hospital with head injuries and are said to be in a serious condition.

A 31-year-old Australian man was arrested and he is currently receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries, under armed guard.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the men's families.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a Dublin man in his 20s is recovering in hospital in Spain after he was injured in a shooting in the Costa Del Sol area.
