Martin: Party has 'lessons to learn' after controversy

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin has said Fianna Fáil has "lessons to learn" about how it operates its conference and communications.

It follows the controversy following the Taoiseach Brian Cowen's radio interview in Galway on Tuesday.

Mr Martin said in an interview today: "I think we all have to reflect on how the conference is organised and on communications issues. Clearly we have lessons to learn."

The Taoiseach has said he will have to be more cautious in future about how he conducts his socialising.

Mr Cowen also said he has the full support of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, despite the controversy following his performance in the radio interview.

However, the Taoiseach admitted he is concerned about the damage that may have been caused to Ireland from the international coverage of the story.
