Man in hospital after attack in Ennis

A 26-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being set upon by a gang in a late night assault in Co. Clare.

It happened on O'Connell Street in Ennis just before midnight last night.

It is believed the victim was with a group of friends when he was attacked.

He suffered head injuries in the assault and was rushed to Limerick Regional Hospital, where his condition is being described as critical.

Two men aged 22 and 29 are being questioned over the attack at Ennis garda station.

The scene has been closed for a technical examination.

Gardaí in Ennis are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them on 065 6848100.
