Leo Varadkar slammed by hospital consultants

Hospital consultants have hit out at the Minister for Health for suggesting more of them should be working at weekends.

The Irish Medical Organisation has called the remarks "inflammatory".

Leo Varadkar today admitted that many consultants were "very stretched" but claimed not all hospitals had consultant cover during weekends.

The IMO says working practices are not the issue.

It says the problem is that the hospital system does not have enough consultants to provide 24-7 care.
