Latest: Gardaí make appeal for information and dashcam footage after a fatal Longford crash

Update 8.40pm: Gardaí are making a particular appeal for information to motorists after a fatal crash in Co Longford.

A 32-year-old pedestrian was walking along the N4 at around a 11.45pm last night when he was struck by a passing car.

It happened at Deerpark near Newtownforbes.

He was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A man in his 20s has come forward to help Gardaí with their enquiries.

Gardaí would like to speak to drivers who were travelling on that route from Newtownforbes to Roosky between 11pm and 12.30am to come forward if they have dash cam footage or information.

Update - 2.48pm: Car recovered and being examined following fatal hit-and-run in Longford

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information following a fatal hit and run collision in Co Longford.

At approximately 11.45pm a 32-year-old male pedestrian was seriously injured when he was struck by a passing car on the N4 at Deerpark near Newtownforbes.

He was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A man in his 20s believed to be the driver of the car involved in the incident has now come forward and is assisting Gardaí with their investigations. A car has also been recovered and is being examined by investigators.

The scene is being examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local scenes of crime officers. Traffic diversions are in place and the road is expected to remain closed until later this evening.

The body of the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Tullamore Hospital where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist Linda Mulligan later today.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for information and in particular to motorists travelling on the N4 route from Newtownforbes to Roosky between 11pm and 12.30am who may have dash cam footage or information that can assist with the investigation to contact them.

Earlier: Gardaí are appealing for information following a suspected fatal hit and run collision in Co. Longford.

A male pedestrian aged in his early 20s was struck by a passing vehicle while walking on the N4 at Deerpark near Newtownforbes at approximately 11.45pm.

He was treated at the scene by a Paramedic Team and removed by Ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar.

The vehicle involved in the collision failed to stop and continued in the direction of Newtowforbes. The injured man was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The scene is preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local scenes of crime officers.

Traffic diversions are in place and the road is expected to remain closed for the next number of hours. The local Coroner and the Office of State Pathologist will be notified.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witness and are particularly appealing to the driver of the vehicle to come forward.
