Last day for public to voice opinions to Citizens' Assembly on 8th Amendment

People are being encouraged to have their say on the 8th Amendment.

The deadline for submissions to the Citizens' Assembly is 5pm this evening.

Comments, suggestions and opinions can be submitted via the Assembly's website within a matter of minutes.

Ailbhe Smyth, chair of the Coalition to Repeal the 8th, said that women's reproductive rights have no place in the constitution.

"This is a very interesting opportunity, really, for people to participate in contributing to making a decision about an issue which is incredibly important for this country and important for women, important for equality, important for human rights," she said.

"it's not every day the general population is invited to communicate with a body which is set up to make recommendations to Government."

Independent TD Mattie McGrath, who wants to see the 8th retained, said that it is important that everyone's voice is heard.

"I think it's vital that people, if they want to retain the 8th, and there are many, who feel they've been locked out, that they simply email to the Citizen's Assembly, and make their point that they're in favour of retaining the 8th Amendment."
