Kenny not contemplating presidential refusal of abortion bill

The Taoiseach has refused to comment on the possibility that President Michael D Higgins may not sign The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill into law.

The legislation is making its way through the Seanad and if there are no amendments, it will be forwarded to President Higgins for his signature.

At that stage, if President Higgins refuses to sign the bill into law, it can be referred to the Supreme Court to check its constitutionality, following consultations with the Council of State.

Speaking to Ocean FM News yesterday evening, Enda Kenny said any such referral was a matter entirely for President Higgins.

"This is one function I have absolutely no authority to delve into at all," he said.

"The question … is a matter entirely for the President, and therefore I am precluded entirely from making any comment about that."
