Kelly article 'shows why Govt had to make cuts last year'

The Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said he believes the article written by economist Morgan Kelly at the weekend is an "important one".

Mr Martin said it highlights why exactly the Government had to make such savage cuts last December.

He said his party will support the budgetary measures that the new Fine Gael Labour coalition will bring in next December.

Mr Martin said: "We're not going into any specifics. We’ll see this week what happens. We don't support, for example, the proposed levy on pension funds.

"Again Fine Gael hyped up during the election that there was going to be a jobs budget that has now been reduced to a jobs initiative, but that said, we will support the fundamentals that are required to get the economy back on track."
