Judge imposes one-year sentence on man for 'horrendous' sex abuse

A County Laois man has been given a one-year sentence for sexually assaulting his niece when she was 11 years old.

The 27-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court on two counts of sexually assaulting the girl at her home between June 1998 and June 2001.

Mr Justice Garrett Sheehan imposed a one-year concurrent sentence on each count and suspended the last six months of the sentence for a period of two years.

The man has been placed on the sex offenders’ register.

A victim impact statement was read to the court in which the woman, who is now 21, described the abuse as “horrendous”.
