Jobs initiative proposals may be unveiled next week

The Cabinet has been discussing the planned jobs initiative, which could be announced as soon as next Tuesday.

Fine Gael and Labour promised a stimulus package to generate employment in the coalition's first 100 days in office.

The plan will have to be revenue neutral. In other words, any measures announced in it will have to be met with either spending cuts or tax increases.

It is understood that the initiative will not hit pay packets in the manner of a full-scale Budget, and that its key aim will be to build confidence.
