Irish Water now officially owns 138 more water treatment facilities

Irish Water has officially taken over 138 water treatment facilities around the country.

The waterworks and waste water plants of over two dozen County Councils are now owned by the water utility.

They have been transferred after the last Water Services Act allowed for a €460m payout to councils in exchange for the facilities.

The move, which had been expected, will make it more difficult to abolish the utility as it now owns 375 water facilities around the country, as well as every underground water main and sewer in the country.
