Irish people now eat more ice-cream than Italians.

On average each of us consumes eight litres of the tasty treat per year, putting us ahead of both the Italians and the British.

But people from New Zealand top the poll, consuming a staggering 28.4 litres per person per year, followed closely by the USA at almost 21 litres.

The research, carried out by 11850, also revealed that contrary to popular belief men are more likely to eat ice cream than women.
