Increase of almost 3,000 in numbers signing on

The unemployment rate remained static last month at 14.3%, official figures have revealed.

Just over 8,000 people have come off the Live Register in the last year with the total signing on for dole benefits in May at 432,907.

The unemployment rate is now at the same level as this time last year and down from the peak of 14.6% seen in the late autumn.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) also noted the level of long-term unemployed, with 188,729 men now signing on for a year or more, compared to 53,680 women.
