Hospital launches investigation into leak of abortion information

The National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street in Dublin has launched an investigation into how details of a woman's termination at the facility were leaked to the media.

It was reported this morning that an abortion carried out at the hospital earlier this summer was the first to be carried out under the new Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.

However, the Department of Health said that although the new abortion legislation was signed into law on July 30t, it has not yet commenced.

It said more work was needed on appointing members to appeals panels before the laws could come into effect.
