Gormley to double plastic bag tax to 44 cents

Environment Minister John Gormley is reportedly set to double the plastic bag levy to 44 cents later this year.

Reports this morning say the Department of the Environment has indicated that legislation to increase the tax will be published next month.

The levy was first introduced in March 2002 and was set at 15 cents, but was later increased to 22 cents.

It has raised around €120m for the Exchequer.
