Gardaí to hear plans to merge Ombudsman, Inspectorate and Policing Authority

Middle-ranking gardaí will this week hear calls for the Garda Ombudsman, the Garda Inspectorate and the Policing Authority to be merged.

The proposal is one of the motions up for discussion at the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, which gets underway in Co Meath today.

The gathering will also hear calls for increased recruitment, and for pay levels to be restored.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald is expected to address delegates on Wednesday.

General Secretary of the AGSI, John Redmond, said that he is happy with the Minister's engagement with the group since she took office.

"The new minister, Minister Fitzgerald, has, I suppose, welcomed us with open arms is a thing that I wouldn't like to say," he said.

"But she certainly meets us with no agenda.

"She listens to our concerns, she engages with us and she's sending out all the right signals."
