Gardaí have launched an investigation after a man in his sixties was shot dead in County Wicklow.

Another man in his sixties has been arrested in connection with the incident which happened at a farm house in Shillelagh yesterday evening.

The shooting happened at a farm house in Shillelagh at around 6.30pm yesterday evening and the man, Walter Tomkins, from Cronelea in Shillelagh, died at the scene.

His body remains at the house and the State Pathologist is expected there this morning.

A firearm has been recovered and a man - also in his sixties - is being questioned at Baltinglass Garda station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be questioned for up to 72 hours.

It is understood the deceased man's mother died last weekend aged 93 and was buried on Monday.

Gardaí say they are following a definite line of inquiry and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
