The Garda Ombudsman is to investigate a serious road crash in Limerick overnight, which has left a young man fighting for his life in hospital.

The man, in his 20s, is believed to have been traveling in a car that was being pursued by gardaí when the vehicle overturned and crashed at Punch's Cross on the south of Limerick city.

It is believed the car, which was carrying three other young men, collided head-on with another car carrying two women.

Those involved are being treated at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital for 'critical' to 'less serious' injuries.
