A man who is believed to be a former politician is being held by gardaí in Cork on suspicion of conspiracy to kill. He is accused of conspiring to murder a garda, a revenue official and an accountant.
The man, who is in his 30s, was arrested yesterday morning.
He is accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill three people who were allegedly looking into his business affairs.
It is believed the man he approached reported the incident to gardaí who then launched an undercover operation.
This led to a meeting between the suspect and an officer posing as a hitman, and subsequently led to the man's arrest.
He is being questioned under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act and he can be held for up to seven days.
