First  1916 commemoration events begin today

The first official events to commemorate 1916 get underway today.

Months of events are planned and every county will have their own commemorations and celebrations to mark 100 years since the rising.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys will be attending a state event in Dublin later today.

First  1916 commemoration events begin today

"Today is going to be a great day," she said.

"We're kicking off our year-long programme today for the 2016 commemorations.

"Today's events will start off with a flag-raising ceremony in Dublin Castle at one o'clock.

"The event is open to the public, there will be viewing screens. It will be a solemn event to start our year of commemoration and reflection."
