Final high-rise tower block in Ballymun to be demolished

The last of the high rise tower blocks in Ballymun in North Dublin is about to be demolished.

The fifteen-storey Joseph Plunkett Tower will be dismantled by a hydraulic nibbler which will bite its way through the structure, floor by floor.

The nibbler has been used for four of the original towers and 29 of the smaller blocks of eight and four storeys, and is used instead of a dramatic implosion.

Some locals in Ballymun said that they were sad to see the end of the final tower block that was built nearly 50 years ago.

"Well, it's kind of sad in a sense, because they were actually fabulous flats," said one.

"They were so big - huge, they were.

"We were quite happy in them, there was a lot of great people in them."
