Fianna Fáil TD resigns from party

Fianna Fáil TD Joe Behan has today resigned from the party in protest against the measures announced in this week’s Budget.

The Government is now facing a backbench revolt as Opposition grows to the new medical card regulations which end the automatic right to a medical card for over 70’s.

The Wicklow deputy who was elected to the Dáil last year confirmed his decision this evening in spite of a partial climbdown by the Government which relaxed the income threshold levels.

Joe Behan said he was appalled by the removal of the automatic entitlement to the medical card for those aged over 70 years.

Meanwhile, Green party backbenchers have also called on the Government to rethink the medical card changes.

Green TD Mary White has said the terms of the scheme need to be re-addressed.
