Fianna Fáil TD calls for meeting to discuss Cowen leadership

A Government backbencher has today called for a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party to discuss a possible change of leadership.

As Cabinet Ministers close rank around Taoiseach Brian Cowen and declare that he has their support, former Government Chief Whip Tom Kitt has instead called for the issue to be discussed.

Mr Kitt refused an offer of a junior ministry when he lost his post as Government Chief Whip in a May 2008 reshuffle by Mr Cowen.

Mr Kitt has already stated that he will not be contesting the next General Election.
