Fine Gael has warned that it is vital that Budget cuts do not affect Garda resources.
The latest crime statistics show that while murders and manslaughters nearly halved last year, rapes, robberies and gangland crime all increased.
The figures from the CSO also show there’s been a marked rise in drug offences.
Last year offences for the importation and cultivation of drugs were up by almost 40%.
Fine Gael's Justice Spokesman Charlie Flanagan said that money must be spent on protecting people against these criminals.
