Parts of west Donegal and south Galway are the worst affected and power crews will begin work at first light.

Meanwhile, heavy snow has been reported in several parts of the country this morning.

Storm force winds continued to batter the country overnight with gusts of up to 150 kilometres recorded in the north-west.

Thousands of homes in west Donegal and south Galway are still without power while pockets of Clare, Cork, Limerick, Mayo, Kildare and Wicklow are also still powerless.

ESB says it will redeploy resources to get everyone back on the grid.

Mike Fitzgerald, the Head of Distribution and Customer Services at ESB Networks, says he hopes most homes will have their power restored by this evening.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her car in Mullingar, Co Westmeath yesterday afternoon.

This morning, heavy snow is reported around Sligo town, North Tipperary, Offaly and Laois.

Met Éireann is warning the winds will continue but forecaster Vincent O'Shea says they've downgraded their nationwide alert.
