Electricity grid capacity to double by 2025

The country's electricity grid is to double in capacity by 2025, it was announced this afternoon.

State-owned body Eirgrid revealed a €4bn strategy to upgrade the power network over the next 17 years.

It is anticipated that demand for electricity will increase by 60% in that period.

Energy Minister Eamon Ryan said the upgraded grid would put Ireland in a better position to exploit renewable sources of energy.
