A Dublin youth has been accused of defilement of a child which allegedly happened nearly three years ago.
The 17-year-old was charged at the Dublin Children's Court under Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006.
It is alleged that the teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, engaged in “a sexual act, to wit oral sex with a child under the age of 15”, at a location in north Dublin, in July 2009.
The teenager, who was accompanied to his court hearing by his father, was remanded on bail on condition he surrendered his passport and is to appear again later this month.
A preliminary hearing may be held to determine the venue for his trial.
It has not yet been decided whether his case should stay in the juvenile court or instead be sent forward to a higher court which, on conviction, has wider sentencing powers.
