Drivers warned to be careful on roads as cold conditions take hold

It may not have been a white Christmas, but there was heavy snow in some parts of the country overnight.

The Sally Gap in the Wicklow Mountains was closed due to heavy snowfall.

Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, and Wexford all had snowfall of varying levels - though most of it did not stick.

After cold weather overnight drivers are being warned to beware of ice on the roads this morning.

Met Éireann forecaster Willemien Phelan has said midland and northern counties will be especially cold tomorrow.

“(It) is going to continue through the week with a northerly wind that will start to develop on Monday and that is going to bring a much colder air mass over us,” said Phelan.

“It’s really going to be much colder temperatures and any of the showers that will be falling in those northerly winds will be wintry and especially over high ground.”
