Dept 'discriminated against special-needs students'

The Equality Tribunal has upheld three complaints of discriminatory treatment against the Department of Education.

The tribunal found that the department discriminated against three students with special needs by obliging them to leave school when they turned 18, unlike their counterparts in mainstream schools.

The three students in question had no opportunity to extend their time in school as a result.

The tribunal awarded €4,000 to two of the students and €2,000 to the third and also advised the department to review its policy on the matter.
