Taoiseach Brian Cowen said today that no decision has been taken on whether to hold the three outstanding by-elections early next year.
Mr Cowen was responding to media reports suggesting the Government is preparing to hold the elections, along with the childrens' referendum and the Dublin mayoral election, next March.
Speaking in Co Offaly, Mr Cowen described the reports as "speculation" and said the Government had not made any decisions about the by-elections yet.
"I don't see what the speculation adds to the situation at all," Mr Cowen said.
"There are issues to be dealt with that have their own complexity."
