Court remands son accused of murdering Kerry mother in St Patrick's Institution

The 19-year-old son of Susan Dunne, who was found dead at her north Kerry home on Wednesday, has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Patrick Dunne of Ballinagearagh, Lixnaw was brought before a special sitting of Killarney District Court this morning.

Patrick Dunne was led into court in handcuffs by Gardaí at 10.15am this morning. He was accompanied throughout the short hearing by a plain-clothed garda.

Detective Sargeant John Gleeson gave evidence before Judge Olan Kelliher that on Thursday at 8.24pm, he arrested Patrick Dunne at Listowel Garda Station.

At 9.10pm, Mr Dunne was charged with the murder of his mother, Susan Dunne, on or about November 27, 2013, at Ballinagearagh, Lixnaw. The accused made no reply to the charges.

Gardaí asked that Patrick Dunne be remanded to St Patrick’s Institution in Dublin.

Mr Dunne’s solicitor, Pat Enright said he had no objection but that he would be preparing a bail application for submission to the High Court. He also asked that appropriate medical care be afforded to his client.

An application for free legal aid was granted and Judge Kelliher remanded the accused to appear on Wednesday next at 11am at Listowel District Court.

There were a large number of members of Kerry Autism Action in the public gallery as well as Patrick Dunne’s father, William.
