Couple whose baby died due to 'medical misadventure' told they can have no more children

The father of a baby girl who died shortly after birth in Limerick six years ago says he and his wife have now been told they cannot have any more children.

A verdict of medical misadventure was recorded in court yesterday at the inquest into the death of Caoimhe Mulcair, who passed away in 2009 at the then Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

A letter read out in court from the head of Limerick Maternity Hospital yesterday apologised for the failings in care to John and Joan Mulcair and to baby Caoimhe, as well as the upset and distress experienced by the couple.

They went on to have a son two years after Caoimhe's death, but John says after a total of six rounds of IVF, they were given more bad news.

He said: "The first one was positive now with Caoimhe, the second one failed, the third one was positive again with Luke.

"He's our little boy, Luke, he's four now and he is after starting school.

"The fourth one then failed, the fifth one failed and the sixth one failed. After that then we were told that there is no hope for another child again."
