Couple who won €5.3m Lotto jackpot are off to Vegas

A married couple have collected a cheque for €5,318,671 from National Lottery headquarters today.

They intend to go for a trip to Las Vegas and buy two-seat convertible Ferrari.

They purchased their €7.50 Quick Pick Lotto ticket in the Roslevan Stores, Roslevan, Ennis, Co Clare last Wednesday, the day of the Midweek jackpot draw.

This was the first time the store has sold a winning Lotto jackpot ticket.

Today’s lucky couple, who wish to remain anonymous, are not themselves from Clare.

The pair declared themselves “delighted” to have scooped the Lotto jackpot.

The lucky husband said, while sipping a glass of champagne in National Lottery offices: “I always said I’d win Lotto, but it was still a very big surprise when it happened, and all the more because I’ve been playing since 1988, when the game began, and always play my own numbers.

“On Wednesday, I included just one line of Quick Pick numbers – as insurance - and that’s the line that won!”

“2015 has been a very mixed year for our family, and this is just fantastic news, simply the best. When I went online on Wednesday night and saw that the numbers were a Quick Pick selection, I said to myself: ‘I probably have them all’, little thinking that when I did fish the ticket out of my wallet, I really did have them all!

‘When I stopped shaking, I went to the fridge, got a bottle of wine, poured two glasses and gave one to my wife, who was sitting in her PJs by the fire. She didn’t know what was happening – thought I’d lost my mind. She must have checked the ticket a thousand different ways before she’d believe we’d won.”

Today’s happy family have some plans to celebrate the win.

“A trip to Las Vegas, a family weekend away very soon, just to chat through it all,” said the winning wife.

“We’re going to look after the family, children and grandchildren, and make sure they’re sorted.

“And I’m definitely buying a two-seat convertible Ferrari. It’s been on my bucket list, and now it’s time to act.”

This is the 40th Lotto jackpot to be won from a ticket purchased in Co Clare.

Clare’s largest jackpot prize of €8,302,209 was won in Kilrush, Co Clare on March 5, 2014. Total Lotto jackpot winnings from Co Clare, including today’s big prize, now stand at €60.1m.

To date, there have been 20 Lotto jackpot winning tickets purchased in Ennis, Co. Clare and the surrounding area. This brings the Ennis total in Lotto jackpot prize wins to over €28m, including today’s win.

Saturday’s Lotto jackpot will be a guaranteed €2m.
