Councillors to discuss merger proposal

A controversial proposal to reduce the number of local authorities around the country is expected to be main issue of discussion as the body representing councillors holds its AGM today.

An Bord Snip Nua has recommended that some city and county councils be merged as part of efforts to cut public spending.

The Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland has expressed dismay at the idea and says it was put forward without any effort to consult local councillors.

The association says the mergers would result in endless conflict over policy, finance and the allocation of resources.
