Councillor calls on prison service to stamp out mobiles in jails

A Limerick councillor says stopping people from bringing mobile phones into Ireland's prisons is "not rocket science".

Fianna Fáil Councillor Sean Lynch is calling on the Justice Minister and the prison service to take the issue seriously and implement more stringent measures.

It follows yesterday's convictions of two men, Wayne Dundon and Nathan Killeen, for the murder of businessman Roy Collins in the city five years ago, one of whom ordered the killing from inside prison.

Councillor Lynch, who is a retired Garda, says the issue has to be taken seriously and it is vital to tackling crime.

He said: "Whoever is bringing in these phones are just as guilty as the person who directs the crime, they are just as guilty as the person that pulls the trigger and they are just as guilty as the person that drives the getaway car.

"They are acting in concert with these people and that has to be addressed now."
