Corruption risks 'undermine economic stability'

Ireland needs to tackle the fundamental governance gaps that will continue to allow for corruption unless addressed, according to the latest report from Transparency International (TI)..

The Irish arm of the anti-corruption group today called on political leaders "to go beyond austerity policies to tackle fundamental governance gaps that undermine economic stability".

A Europe-wide TI anti-corruption report published today names Ireland as one of the countries that has not yet outlawed undisclosed political donations; that has excessive fees for freedom of information requests and that has not yet regulated lobbying.

Advocacy and research manager at TI Ireland Nuala Haughey said the problems that caused Ireland's economic problems are a result of the deficit in proper governance.

“Ireland’s anti-corruption framework is decidedly patchy, with significant weaknesses that undermine the quality of our democracy and standards of governance,” she said.

“The Taoiseach’s election mantra was that he wanted to make Ireland the best small country in the world in which to do business, raise a family and grow old with dignity and respect.

"If he is serious about this, he needs to go beyond austerity policies to tackling the fundamental corruption risks and governance gaps that undermine our economic stability.”
