Commissioner to investigate claims of garda embezzlement

The Garda Commissioner has been asked to investigate claims that two members of the force were involved in embezzling funds for a property deal in Romania.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said she has asked Noirin O'Sullivan to investigate the claims made in the Dáil last February.

United Left TD Clare Daly claimed two officers in Galway had embezzled around €500,000 in funds, with Garda fax machines used in certain transactions.

She also claimed that the officer responsible for investigating the complaint was transferred to another area, but that the Garda Ombudsman was unable to help because the time limit for complaints had passed.
