Carey: Cowen has backing of FF majority

The Minister for Community and Gaeltacht Affairs Pat Carey has said the Taoiseach has the overwhelming support of TDs within the party.

Last night, Brian Cowen faced down some of his disgruntled deputies, and told them to stop the internal sniping at his leadership.

There may be more trouble ahead though, as some Fianna Fáil Senators may lose the party whip later over the Civil Partnership Bill.

But Minister Pat Carey says Mr Cowen has the parliamentary party's full support.

"It was never in doubt that he would get it," Minister Carey said.

"But he spoke very very strongly, passionately and clearly about the challenges ahead.

"They are not simple, and we were always clear that we would go through some very difficult times… but some of those decisions are beginning to bear fruit at this stage."
