Carers 'outraged and bitterly disappointed' by Budget

Family carers are "outraged and bitterly disappointed" at the 4.1% cut to social welfare payments to all carers announced in today's Budget.

The budgetary measure equates to a reduction of €8.80 per week, or €470 per annum, for carers in receipt of the carers allowance.

"Family carers are the only social welfare recipients who have to work for their payment by providing full-time care in the home to older people, the sick and disabled, and have already suffered a 2% decrease in welfare payments due to the abolishment of the Christmas bonus this year," said a spokeswoman for the Carers Association.

She added carers were "facing a very bleak winter".
