CAO sees course applications rise to record level

Courses in business, construction, engineering and technology are seeing a boost in popularity in this year's CAO applications.

A record total of 74,424 applications was received before this year's initial deadline, that is a jump of 2% on last year's figure.

Architecture has seen its first preference numbers rise by 15% after a similar rise last year, while engineering and technology courses went up by 9% this year.

This year also sees a 12% increase in the number of students making law their first choice, but general arts and science degrees have experienced a drop of just under 3%..

Demand for medicine has slipped for the third year in a row.
